The M1911 also known as "Government" or "Colt Government", is a single-action, semi-automatic pistol with a bright history. It was used as a service pistol in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. It originated in the late 1890's and was widely used as a sidearm of the U.S. military for almost 74 years. The modernized version of M1911 is still in use till this day by the U.S. Army Special Forces, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. This single-action, semi-automatic pistol served as the standard-issue sidearm for the United States armed forces. It was first used in later stages of the Philippine-American War (late 19th century), and was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Modern variants are still in use by units within the U.S. Army Special Forces, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. This pistol produced by Colt was sidearm of the U.S. military from 1911 to 1985, marking one of the longest periods of a standard weapon, of nearly 74 years.
